'Romeward Bound'

The Captain and Rome beckons Lily, and Ted, Barney and Robin Meet a Girl with the Most Phenomenal Body

No wonder Lily's upset: she doesn't get to ride that cute scooter through Italy!
Let me tell you something. To wait three weeks is long. Very long. Too long.

When the Captain tells Lily he is moving to Rome, she is given the choice of coming along to continue being his art consultant for a year or to reject him. Even though the idea of Rome sounds amazing, Lily turns the Captain down for Marshall's career's sake and as well as the sake of their roots in New York (strangely, the Captain has never heard of the phrase "the ship has sailed"). However, she finds out that Honeywall and Cootes (where Marshall works) hasn't had a client in months, and that only Marshall and some other guy are left working. Realising what Lily had just done, Marshall races away excitedly to talk to the Captain about the offer.
Once again, Lily is given the choice and turns it down, this time because she is intimidated by the big prospect and afraid she will fail in Rome. A suited up Marshall gives his heartfelt support speech (which was very impressive given the only words, in Italian, he said over and over again were "Come on, bro. Don't Bogart all the Funions"). Marshall and Lily are going to Italy, guys!

Meanwhile, Ted and Barney are sitting at the bar when a girl in a puffy coat walks in. Ted tells Barney he meet her at a yoga class and was going to ask her out... until she took off her coat and he saw her amazing body. Greatly intrigued, Barney stays around ("I've already paid for this drink", looking down at the table where he has no drink in sight) for the girl to reveal her body... only she never does.  He even gets Carl to turn up the heat inside the bar, but no luck. Lily is worried about Barney's attitude and behaviour (he's physically drooling), seeing as he's engaged, but Barney assures her he is "looking, not touching". When Robin enters the scene and greets the girl, Barney's dream seems to be coming true: a three-way ("THE BELT IS MINE!!!"). Seriously, he has the biggest grin and the happiest voice, even after Robin tells him the girl, Liddy, is their wedding planner (cue the double Ds joke).
When Robin finds out why Ted and Barney are acting so weird, she expresses her curiosity about Liddy's body too, much to their relief. After Liddy leaves for the restroom, Barney wishes Marshall was here to tell Liddy to take off her coat, since Marshall doesn't "stink" of desperation (unlike Ted) and that Liddy would know he's a guy who has meet the girl of his dreams and wants to spend the rest of his life with her and only her........................ so.................... Robin address's the exact same thing I was thinking at that moment: "So why don't you ask her?"
After a bit of coaxing, Barney asks Liddy to take off her coat and she finally says yes. Victory! Then he and Robin have to hold each other and shield their eyes as the awesomeness of Liddy's body is exposed. Thanks to Robin, Barney can now say creepy things to women and be guaranteed to get away with it!
Then comes a scene between Ted and Barney that is slightly uncomfortable: Ted tries to warn Barney not to over do his attitude and that Robin may not be as cool as Barney thinks she is, but Barney snaps at him, saying he is the one marrying Robin, not Ted, and that he knows her best, not Ted.

Opinion time!
With that scene I just mentioned, Barney does seem to be acting like a jerk, but I think Ted has a bit of fault in the conversation too. Even though Ted's speaking my mind to Barney, he did it in a way that was a bit more commanding than suggestive. I think a better way to say it would be something like, "I know Robin's cool with this and all, but this sort of attitude has hurt her in the past when you guys broke up. I wouldn't like to see you overdo it one time and accidentally hurt not only her, but yourself too. You may want to talk with her about it, just saying as your friend". I agree most of the fault lies with Barney, but I would say he felt really tense after what Ted said; after all, Ted did date Robin for a year. He probably didn't want to be reminded of that relationship. I would go as to even say that in his head, it sounded almost threatening. But yes, he definitely overreacted.

Also, was there a bit of flashback mix up to do with Lily's calls to Marshall? Let me explain: earlier, she called him and he said he was "working on a big case". When she comes by to Honeywall and Cootes on the same day, she sees Marshall working on a house of cards and says, "So when you said 'Hey Lily. I can't really talk. I'm working on a big project right now. It's a real house of cards...". Wait... what? The "working on a big case" call is shown later among the montage of past calls. She may have called him again (which we did not see) and got the "house of cards" response, but I really think it was a slight mix up.
Funnily enough, I spotted another mistake: when Liddy gives Robin and Barney the menus, in some shots Barney is holding his longways while in other shots he holds it upright.

Overall, I once again enjoyed another episode of How I Met Your Mother. I liked how Liddy's Body of Awesomeness was portrayed so exaggerated, and that Lily and Marshall are actually going to go to Rome (presumably after the wedding to give them something to do in the mid-year break). I also liked another example of Barney's commitment to Robin.

As for the issue of Barney's attitude? I'm guessing it will cause a problem at the wedding, but it'll be nothing Swarkles can't handle!

Pre-episode prediction: didn't really have a prediction for this episode (the synopsis pretty much explained it) but did I think Lily and Marshall would really go to Rome? No.

Star of Favourite Quotes: Ted

Ted: *in the highest/quietest voice* She's talking to me!
Ted (about Liddy's body): I can't even describe it. It-it would be like explaining a rainbow to a blind person.
Ted: This is a body that would melt a Nazi's face.

So I had to wait three weeks for one episode, only to now wait another two weeks for the next one? Not cool!

Want to hear a Robin/bird joke?

In other news, check out this cover art for Season 8.

I love this cover personally. It shows the gang where they truly belong: in their booth. I like the colour scheme too. For those who have read my post 'Is Barney Becoming the Main Character?' you may be asking what my analysis is of this cover (since I have compared each season's cover in terms of character focus).
Well here it is: Barney still holds his reign in the middle spot, but I feel Ted has some significant focus here. He's postioned more openly (not to mention closer as well) and the starting point of the semi-circle the viewer's eye draws: from him to Robin to Barney to Marshall to Lily (that may not be the same for everyone though). As for the conversation they would have...

Barney: "Aren't I just so successful? I got this woman from single to engaged in less than 10 seconds!"
Ted: "I'm so rundown. Why aren't I dressed nicely like everyone else? Yet, I feel something special is coming..."
