A Bachelor Party for Barney Doesn't Meet Expectations... Or Does it?
Is it just me or does the top of that seat in the centre look like a giant red jellybean? |
Apologies for the very late recap. First week of school in the second term and an exciting weekend kind of put me in a unbloggish environment.
So Barney is tasked by Robin to hand $5000 of American notes to their caterer. Easy to walk it four blocks, right? Well, as soon as Barney walks out the door, a bag comes over his head and in that instant he is kidnapped. But don't alarmed guys, it's just Ted and Marshall giving a strong start to Barney's bachelor party! Barney is impressed, but unfortunately for Robin he now can't be with her at the dinner with his mum.
But Barney's fun is very short-lived: his friends take him to a very ordinary hotel room, and provide Barney's "ideal" things at a bachelor party.
"Fear for our lives" = watching 'An Inconvenient Truth'
"Entertainment" = a balloon clown
"Karate Kid appearance" = Ralph Macchio (the guy who played Daniel-San in the film)
(anyone who remembers Barney's opinion of who was the "real" Karate Kid will know why this is here)
"Stripper" = Quinn
Ouch. So, in short, Barney is left sitting in the bathroom alone while everyone else got to enjoy Quinn's show. He calls it quits, very disappointed, and as they drive home, Ralph Macchio mocks Barney, calling him a loser for not even gambling when they are this close to Atlantic City. This triggers Barney's addiction centre, and they are soon in a casino.
This is where the $5000 comes in, or rather goes out because Barney ends up losing the whole lot. Barney is able to get $80 000 credit from a mobster and loses two things: the money and Marshall. Yep, he sold Marshall to the mobsters!
When he finally gets home, an angry Robin is there, explaining how her night with his mum was so horrible, and Quinn only makes things worse by showing up in Robin's view. As a result, Robin ends it and throws the ring at him, storming away. At this point I thought, "God, no".
But wait! This is where HIMYM makes everything okay: it was all a play. Here's how it happened: weeks earlier, the gang were hopeless in ideas about how to make Barney's bachelor party legendary (since every night is legendary for Barney) when Robin suddenly comes up with the ultimate idea: give Barney the worst night of his life. She and the rest of gang arranged everything, including Quinn, the casino owner and Loretta as their allies in the plot. Is it too mean for Barney? Hahaha, no.
Back in the present, Barney witnesses the mobsters cut off Marshall's hand and he cries and begs for his life as the mobsters drag him into his apartment. There, he gets a big "SURPRISE!" from everyone and the play, 'The Barney', is revealed to him. "That is.... awesome!" Barney is very impressed with his fiance's talent of giving him his "ideals" without him knowing it. Barney does say one negative: that they still didn't have the "actual" Karate Kid, but that was before when William Zabka came out of the clown gear.
Once again, a very good episode for this season. Definitely in the top half of a 'Best of Season 8' list (when the season ends, I might actually do that list). Did not see the play twist coming at all (I remind all that I no longer seek spoilers or promos for upcoming episodes). I did find identify how weirdly organised the party was, especially since Quinn was invited (unless the identity of the appointed stripper is anonymous) but it somehow didn't occur to me that it was all fake. Maybe I just unexpectedly expect the unexpected all the time, but I'm not saying that's a bad thing, because I love those surprises.
I also loved how it was Robin who came up with 'The Barney': accurately predicting Barney's every move to torment him, only to swoop under and catch his sanity at the very end. Those two just really complete each other, don't they?
Plus, I really liked Ralph Macchio's guest appearance, who shares some of Barney's mannerisms in the episode ("I'm nothing like Ralph Macchio!").
Pre-episode prediction: I had accidently heard that Quinn would be returning and I feared the bachelor party would, of course, end the wrong way. I also figured it would "tie" into the tie-tie situation that Barney faces at the wedding (pun intended). To my relief, I can now go on knowing Quinn will not be that other "tie".

Barney Stinson: Shut it Ralph Maccio! Why don't you go have a party with Luke Skywalker and Harry Potter and War Horse and all the other movie bad guys and stop ruining mine!For those who didn't watch the episode, if I can't make you watch the promo, maybe Freaky-Face Marshall and Ted will!
